1947年生于阿姆斯特丹，本·桑伯加特是知名的荷兰电影大师，作品格局恢弘，视野犀利，刻划人性深刻，充满爱与关怀。自荷兰电影电视学院毕业以来，他便沉溺在影像工作中，拍摄了许多纪录片，拥有丰富的跨国制作经验，曾策划执导许多不同类型的电视影集和剧情，也参与过电视台的儿童节目制作。

于1989年以《MyFatherLivesInRio》荣获柏林影展中的儿童影展妇幼家庭奖、荷兰影展影评人大奖，1996年以《TheBoyWhoStoppedTalking》夺下柏林影展联合国儿童救援基金会大奖，2004年更以改编自荷兰小说家泰莎德露（TessadeLoo）畅销全球350万册的《烽火孪生泪》，席卷欧洲票房市场，成功入围奥斯卡最佳外语片奖，叫好又叫座。
