孟兴民
孟兴民,男,1963年9月出生,1984年毕业于西安地质学院地质系,获得理学学士,1998年毕业于英国伦敦大学皇家霍洛威学院地理系,获得理学博士学位。2010年4月被任命为兰州大学西部环境与气候变化研究院院长,现为兰州大学资源环境学院党委书记。

教育背景
孟兴民于1984年毕业于西安地质学院地质系,获得理学学士学位。1998年,他在英国伦敦大学伦敦大学皇家霍洛威学院学院地理系完成了学业,获得了理学博士学位。
职业生涯
孟兴民的职业生涯始于1984年至1985年间,担任西安地质学院地质系的助教。随后,他在甘肃省科学院地质自然灾害防治研究所担任研究助理和助理研究员,专注于滑坡的研究与防治工作。1991年至1992年,他在英国莱斯特大学地理系继续开展相关研究。1992年至1997年,他在英国伦敦大学皇家霍洛威学院地理系担任研究员,期间主要研究中国的黄土滑坡、湿陷、气候变迁以及风尘环境等问题。自1997年起,孟兴民在该校地理系担任地理信息系统主管,负责教学和科研工作。2008年,孟兴民被聘为兰州大学萃英特聘教授,开始在中国内地的工作。
主要成就
孟兴民的研究领域涵盖环境地质灾害的防治与研究,以及气候、环境变迁及风沙尘暴等领域。他在这些领域的研究成果受到了国际同行的高度评价。他的著作《中国西北黄土区滑坡》(英文版)在国际滑坡地质灾害界广泛引用。此外,他还为全球最大百科全书Encyclopedia Britannica撰写了有关滑坡的定义文章,显示了他在国际上的研究水平和地位。在气候和环境变迁方面,孟兴民提出了第五地球磁化率生物源理论,并在Quaternary Science Reviews上发表了相关的高引用论文。他对中国西部风沙尘暴新起源的提出也得到了后继研究者的验证。
