乔治·帕里西

乔治·帕里西(Giorgio Parisi,1948年8月4日—),男,出生于意大利罗马,意大利理论物理学家,2021年诺贝尔物理学奖得主,意大利猞猁之眼国家科学院院士,研究领域为量子场论统计力学复杂系统。1980年,乔治·帕里西担任中国科学院理论物理研究所客座访问教授。乔治·帕里西在1992年当选为法国科学院通讯院士,1993年当选为法国科学院院士,2003年当选为美国国家科学院外籍院士,2018年,乔治·帕里西任意大利猁之眼国家科学院主席。2021年成为诺贝尔物理学奖得主。他还是美国国家科学院、欧洲科学院、欧洲科学院和美国哲学学会的成员。
帕里西在多个方面都有着杰出贡献,包括研究深非弹性过程中的标度违规(Altarelli-Parisi方程)、超导体通量限制模型作为夸克限制机制的假说、在统计经典系统中使用超对称性,在湍流中引入多重分形,随机聚集增长模型的随机微分方程(Kardar-Parisi-张姓方程)以及对复制方法的开创性分析等。

人物经历
帕里西于1948年在罗马出生。1970年在尼古拉·卡比博教授的指导下毕业于物理学系。他在意大利国家和物理研究院弗拉斯卡蒂实验室开始了他的科学生涯,先为意大利国家科学院成员(1971-1973年),后来成为该研究院(1973-1981年)的研究员。在此期间,他长期在国外学习研究,先后在纽约哥伦比亚大学(1973-1974年)、布雷斯-苏尔-伊维特高级科学学院(1976-1977年)、巴黎高等师范学院(1977-1978年)任研究员。

1992年,他因对无序系统理论的贡献而获得博尔茨曼奖章。
1993年,乔治·帕里西当选法国科学院外籍院士。

科研成就
从无序的复杂系统中发现隐藏规律和模式
在1980年,乔治·帕里西发现了无序的复杂材料之中的隐藏模式,他的发现是对复杂系统理论的最重要的贡献。他们的研究让其他科学家可以理解和描述大量有着明显随机性的材料和现象。这些材料和现象不仅局限在物理学领域,也包括数学、生物学、神经科学以及机器学习
他对自旋玻璃开展了深入研究。自旋玻璃是一种特殊类型的金属合金,其中铁原子随机混合进铜原子网格。尽管只有少量铁原子,但它们却以一种极端而令人费解的方式改变了整个材料的磁性。每一个铁原子的行为都像一个小四氧化三铁(或者说自旋),它受到靠近它的其他铁原子的影响。在普通磁铁中,所有自旋都指向同一方向,但在自旋玻璃中,这些铁原子的行为受到阻碍;一些自旋对想要指向同一方向,而另一些自旋对想要指向相反方向。
在关于自旋玻璃的书的导言中,帕里西写道:“研究自旋玻璃就像观看莎士比亚戏剧中的人类悲剧。如果你想同时和两个人交朋友,但他们却彼此憎恨,这可能会让人沮丧。怎样才能把悲剧降到最低水平呢?”

打破复制对称
彼得·扬,加州大学圣克鲁斯分校的物理学教授表示,旋转玻璃背后的数学细节“非常奇怪”。将均场理论应用于旋转玻璃首先需要创建系统的“副本”,然后以某种方式将这些副本分成组,以利用它们之间的一些数学对称性。最初应用均场理论到旋转玻璃中,是以一种简单的方式“打破对称”,得到一个单一的序参量,但这种方法导致了不一致的结果。
因此,需要一种新颖的打破对称的方式。但问题是,该方法要求副本的数量被迫趋近于零,对称性可能以无限多种方式被打破,而不清楚如何继续。帕里西提出了一种分解副本的方法,扬将之评价为“天才的方法”。帕里西将副本分成组,然后将这些组分成子组,再将这些子组分成更小的子组,依此类推。最终的结果是得到了无限多个序参量,而不是一个。这种无限分组解决了打破对称性的问题,使副本数量趋于零,并且最后发现了一个数学函数来描述无限多的序参量。
帕里西还表明,在零温度下系统的熵似乎趋于零,因此比以前的结果更一致。进一步的研究发现,描述无限多个序参量的函数与系统序参数的概率分布相关,因为它在复杂的能量景观中波动。现在大多数研究人员认为,帕里西的解决方案实际上是一个精确解决方案,而不仅仅是一个近似解。帕里西因此获得了玻尔兹曼环形山奖。
临界的鸟群与复杂系统
帕里西曾经与 Cavagna 等人合作,对鸟群的运动进行了长期的观察,他们用两个摄像机拍摄同一个鸟群,从而重建出鸟运动的三维坐标,然后从这样一个 3D 的影片中算出来各个时刻,群体中的各只鸟分别处在怎样的位置,又根据相邻各帧画面,计算出鸟的速度,从这样的视频中可以得到很多有用的信息。他们用统计物理方法计算分析了数十万只鸟如何形成一个整体。对一个鸟群而言,最智能的状态应该是某种“团结紧张”的状态。这种状态恰好处在“有序”与“无序”之间,类似于相变的临界点处,此时,一个群体既能保持其稳定性,又能保证个体的信息在群体中有效地传递。
临界的特征对生物群体来说有着重要的意义,在草原上迁徙的羊群,天空中飞翔的鸟群,河流中洄游的鱼群都常常会遇到相似的问题,因为捕食者可能会从各个方向靠近来捕猎群体中的某些个体,甚至有的时候捕食者也会展开群体的攻势。这时候,这些动物们会需要快速做出反应,比如鸟群在空中不断变换着形状,羊群突然聚集在一起,或者鱼群组合成一条看起来更大的鱼的样子,这种灵活应变的能力体现了生物的某种集体智能,这也是简单的有序或者无序态难以实现的。
QCD演化理论
1977年,帕里西和 Altarelli一起发现了核子中的夸克胶子分布的演化方程(又称DGLAP方程,为独立发现这个方程的三组工作的五个人姓氏首字母)。强相互作用的QCD理论中,部分子(夸克和胶子的统称)的分布函数随能标和参考能标(截断)相关,这个分布函数是描述深度非弹性散射截面的重要因子。帕里西与Altarelli用简洁的微扰场论办法给出了分布函数随能标变化的演化方程,是QCD理论与强子实验中一个极其重要的结果。
