乔治·帕里西(Giorgio Parisi,1948年8月4日—),男,出生于

人物经历
帕里西于1948年在罗马出生。1970年在
尼古拉·卡比博教授的指导下毕业于物理学系。他在

从无序的复杂系统中发现隐藏规律和模式
在1980年,乔治·帕里西发现了无序的复杂材料之中的隐藏模式,他的发现是对复杂系统理论的最重要的贡献。他们的研究让其他科学家可以理解和描述大量有着明显
随机性的材料和现象。这些材料和现象不仅局限在物理学领域,也包括数学、生物学、
神经科学以及
机器学习。
他对
自旋玻璃开展了深入研究。自旋玻璃是一种特殊类型的金属合金,其中铁
原子随机混合进铜原子网格。尽管只有少量铁原子,但它们却以一种极端而令人费解的方式改变了整个材料的磁性。每一个铁原子的行为都像一个小
四氧化三铁(或者说
自旋),它受到靠近它的其他铁原子的影响。在普通磁铁中,所有自旋都指向同一方向,但在自旋玻璃中,这些铁原子的行为受到阻碍;一些自旋对想要指向同一方向,而另一些自旋对想要指向相反方向。

打破复制对称
彼得·扬,
加州大学圣克鲁斯分校的物理学教授表示,旋转
玻璃背后的数学细节“非常奇怪”。将均场理论应用于旋转玻璃首先需要创建系统的“副本”,然后以某种方式将这些副本分成组,以利用它们之间的一些数学对称性。最初应用均场理论到旋转玻璃中,是以一种简单的方式“打破对称”,得到一个单一的序参量,但这种方法导致了不一致的结果。
因此,需要一种新颖的打破对称的方式。但问题是,该方法要求副本的数量被迫趋近于零,对称性可能以无限多种方式被打破,而不清楚如何继续。帕里西提出了一种分解副本的方法,扬将之评价为“天才的方法”。帕里西将副本分成组,然后将这些组分成子组,再将这些子组分成更小的子组,依此类推。最终的结果是得到了无限多个序参量,而不是一个。这种无限分组解决了打破对称性的问题,使副本数量趋于零,并且最后发现了一个数学函数来描述无限多的序参量。
帕里西还表明,在零温度下系统的熵似乎趋于零,因此比以前的结果更一致。进一步的研究发现,描述无限多个序参量的函数与系统序参数的
概率分布相关,因为它在复杂的能量景观中波动。现在大多数研究人员认为,帕里西的解决方案实际上是一个精确解决方案,而不仅仅是一个近似解。帕里西因此获得了玻尔兹曼环形山奖。
临界的鸟群与复杂系统
帕里西曾经与 Cavagna 等人合作,对鸟群的运动进行了长期的观察,他们用两个摄像机拍摄同一个鸟群,从而重建出鸟运动的三维坐标,然后从这样一个 3D 的影片中算出来各个时刻,群体中的各只鸟分别处在怎样的位置,又根据相邻各帧画面,计算出鸟的速度,从这样的视频中可以得到很多有用的信息。他们用统计物理方法计算分析了数十万只鸟如何形成一个整体。对一个鸟群而言,最智能的状态应该是某种“团结紧张”的状态。这种状态恰好处在“有序”与“无序”之间,类似于
相变的临界点处,此时,一个群体既能保持其稳定性,又能保证个体的信息在群体中有效地传递。
临界的特征对生物群体来说有着重要的意义,在草原上迁徙的羊群,天空中飞翔的鸟群,河流中洄游的鱼群都常常会遇到相似的问题,因为捕食者可能会从各个方向靠近来捕猎群体中的某些个体,甚至有的时候捕食者也会展开群体的攻势。这时候,这些动物们会需要快速做出反应,比如鸟群在空中不断变换着形状,羊群突然聚集在一起,或者鱼群组合成一条看起来更大的鱼的样子,这种灵活应变的能力体现了生物的某种集体智能,这也是简单的有序或者无序态难以实现的。
QCD演化理论
1977年,帕里西和 Altarelli一起发现了核子中的
夸克和
胶子分布的演化
方程(又称DGLAP方程,为独立发现这个方程的三组工作的五个人姓氏首字母)。
强相互作用的QCD理论中,部分子(夸克和胶子的统称)的分布函数随能标和参考能标(截断)相关,这个分布函数是描述深度
非弹性散射截面的重要因子。帕里西与Altarelli用简洁的微扰场论办法给出了分布函数随能标变化的演化方程,是QCD理论与
强子实验中一个极其重要的结果。
